South Georgia Technical College recently hosted a S.M.A.R.T. Goals workshop at the SGTC Crisp County Center, led by DW Persall, Media and Library Services Specialist. The session focused on helping students develop effective goal-setting strategies that support academic success, career readiness, and personal growth.

The workshop was part of SGTC’s Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP), which emphasizes the development of essential soft skills students need to thrive in the workplace. Persall explained that QEP initiatives are designed to strengthen learning outcomes and equip students with practical tools that extend beyond the classroom.

During the presentation, Persall outlined the S.M.A.R.T. framework—Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound—and demonstrated how students can apply these principles to their academic and career goals. He emphasized that setting clear, realistic goals provides a roadmap for success, increases motivation, and helps students avoid procrastination. Students were encouraged to break larger objectives into manageable steps and create deadlines to track their progress.

Through examples and guided discussion, participants learned how to transform general goals into detailed action plans. The workshop reinforced the importance of planning ahead, staying focused on the “why” behind each goal, and regularly measuring progress to ensure continued improvement.

South Georgia Technical College continues to offer workshops and student development programs that enhance both academic achievement and career preparedness.
