SGTC Jets and Lady Jets sweep Central Georgia Tech
Macon, GA – The South Georgia Technical College Jets and Lady Jets swept the Central Georgia Technical College Titans and Lady Titans in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) contests Wednesday. The Jets handed the Titans their first GCAA loss this season in a narrow 65 – 61 battle and the Lady Jets came from behind to win 91 – 84.
The Lady Jets had fallen to the Lady Titans earlier this season in an 87 – 81 decision. South Georgia Technical College had to come from a 43 – 36 half-time deficit Wednesday to secure the seven-point victory. The win moved the Lady Jets to 6 – 2 in the GCAA and 11 – 12 overall. The Lady Jets are currently second in the GCAA behind East Georgia. Central Georgia Tech fell to 3 – 4 and is ranked fifth in the conference.
Central jumped out to a 21 – 13 lead at the end of the first half and outscored the Lady Jets 23 – 22 in the second quarter to pull ahead 43 – 36 at the half. South Georgia Tech roared back in the third quarter to outscore Central 27 – 20 to tie the game at 63 – 63 after three full quarters.
South Georgia Tech continued to outpace Central in the fourth quarter and wound up with an impressive 91 – 84 victory after losing to Central by six points five days earlier.
Freshman Ja’Niya Broome led the Lady Jets in scoring with 38 points. She was 13 of 21 from the field, six of 12 from the three-point range and six of seven from the foul line. She also had three rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Three other Lady Jets wound up in double digits with freshman Candice Ganga scoring 20 points and pulling down three rebounds along with 10 assists. Jada Jones added 12 points and Jaidyn Elam came away with 10 points. Taja Bennett added six points, Sephora Benth had three points and Sarah Mellouk closed out the scoring with two points.
The SGTC Jets followed up on the Lady Jets victory and handed Central Georgia Tech a narrow 65 – 61 loss. This was Central Georgia Tech’s first GCAA loss this season but they were still able to remain in first place in the conference with an 8 – 1 record.
South Georgia State College is tied for second place with Albany Tech with identical 6 – 3 records and South Georgia Tech is in fourth place with their 5 – 4 GCAA performance. Gordon College, East Georgia, Georgia Highlands, Andrew College and South Crescent round out the rankings in fifth – ninth places respectively.
Sophomore guard Jalexs Ewing led the Jets in scoring with 18 points and eight rebounds and freshman Guillaum Schoentgen was right behind with 16 points and two rebounds. Reggie Cleveland came off the bench to add seven points, Clark Mastin and Marcellus Myles both tossed in six points while Mark Ferdy contributed five points, Matt Mbole, 4, and Ilich Yacaman and Dwight Brown closed out the scoring with two and one point respectively.
The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Jets and they hope to continue their winning ways Saturday when the Jets and the Lady Jets host East Georgia State College Saturday, February 14 in a double-header with games starting at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Both teams will be at home again on Wednesday, February 18th at 5:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. The Lady Jets face South Crescent Technical College and the Jets host South Georgia State College. Both teams will be at home on Saturday, February 21 in a double-header with Andrew College. Games start at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
