A little rain did not damper the spirits at the fourth annual South Georgia Technical College Jets Booster Club Sparky Reeves Classic Golf Tournament held at the Griffin Bell Golf and Conference Center in Americus, Georgia recently. Georgia Southwestern State University’s team of Golf Coach Darcy Donaldson and Stephen Snyder captured first place in the tournament with a two-stroke victory over their nearest competitors.
“Georgia Southwestern is near and dear to my heart and I am pleased to recognize you as the winner of this year’s classic,” said South Georgia Technical College President Emeritus Sparky Reeves when he presented Coach Donaldson and Stephen Snyder with the first place trophy. Reeves is a graduate of GSW and was recognized as the Alumni of the Year for GSW recently.
“I appreciate everyone who came out and played in the tournament and supported the South Georgia Technical College Jets and Lady Jets athletic teams today. Hurricane Michael forced us to postpone it and there was a little rain today but that did not dampen the support and the good time that we had,” said Reeves.
Karl Booker and the Harrod Tree team had been the reigning champions for the past two years but the GSW team ended that streak. Booker and the Harrod Tree team posted a 47 in 2017 to capture the win and this year, GSW won with a 48 in the three-person scramble which is the main fundraiser for the South Georgia Technical College Jets and Lady Jets basketball teams. The Hooks Agency was the winner in the first annual Sparky Reeves Classic in 2015.
Parker’s Heating and Air finished in second place in the tournament. The team of Ryan Young, Brian McMichael and Charlie Bledsoe finished with a 50 and won in head-to-head competition over Jeff Schaeffner’s Team.
“We would like to thank all of the teams who participated in the fourth annual South Georgia Technical College Jets Booster Club Sparky Reeves Golf Tournament this year,” said South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Lady Jets head coach James Frey. “We had a lot of fun and we raised funds for our student athletes and the Jets Booster Club. It was a great day!”
South Georgia Technical College President Emeritus Sparky Reeves, who played in the tournament with his son and grandson, Kevin and Will Reeves, also thanked everyone for their participation and support. “I am humbled by the turnout and the support. I also am very glad that this is a Classic Tournament and not a Memorial Tournament,” laughed Reeves. “I thank everyone who had a part in making this a reality this year and for the last three years. I would also like to encourage everyone to come out and watch the Jets and Lady Jets this season. I think you will be impressed.”
Dr. John Watford, South Georgia Technical College President, also thanked all of the participants for the support for President Emeritus Sparky Reeves, the Jets and Lady basketball teams and for the college, its students, and faculty and staff. “This is a great day and we are here to support our Jets and Lady Jets. We are so appreciative of the support that we receive from each of you and from the community as a whole,” said Dr. Watford.
Thirty-three teams signed up to participate in the three-person scramble which featured a shotgun start, longest drive, and closest to the pin contest in addition to prizes for the top three teams. Due to the reschedule and the rain, 26 teams actually participated.
In addition to the teams who participated in the tournament, there were a number of hole sponsors including: Trane, Easterlin Pecan, Calhoun Landscaping, Metro Power, NAPA Auto Parts, Wayne’s World, Jimmy Windham, Julian & Janis Webb, Parkers Heating and Air, Hooks-Simmons Agency, Dr. Jocelyn Rogers, Dr. Lou and Alex Riccardi, Pat’s Place, The Trask Family, Wally & Brenda Summers, Draw Products, Clinic Drug Store, Barry & Tami Blount, Perry Brothers, Pineland Communications, Edward Jones – Robert Parks, Ryan and Mandy Young, Phoebe Sumter Medical Center, Synovus, First State Bank, Peoples South Bank, Mitsubishi Electric, Citizen’s Bank, Seen & Heard, Terri A.
