SGTC Jets hosting FREE Basketball Skills Clinic before Homecoming, Sophomore Day celebration Feb. 28th

     South Georgia Technical College assistant men’s basketball coach Stephen Birchfield and members of the Jets will be hosting a FREE basketball clinic from 10 a.m. until 12 noon for boys and girls ages 8 – 14 prior to the college’s Homecoming/Alumni/Sophomore Day Celebration on Saturday, February 28th in the James S. Peters gymnasium.

  The 2026 SGTC Sophomore Day Youth Basketball Skills Clinic is limited to the first 25 participants between the ages of 8 – 14.  Participants will receive a free t-shirt and a certificate.  Players will learn elite skills from the SGTC Jets that include dribbling, shooting, and defense.  The clinic will be held on the Jets court in the James S. Peters gymnasium.

    Parents interested in signing up their children should reach out to Coach Stephen Birchfield, Stephen.birchfield@southgatech.edu or by calling 229-931-2025 after filling out the Basketball Skills Clinic application.

    Following the Basketball Skills Clinic activities, the Homecoming/Alumni Day Celebration will kick-off at 12:15 p.m. with the free Hot Dog and Hamburger cookout and Tailgate event sponsored by the Sumter County Chamber of Commerce, Imerys Refracturing Minerals and the Jets Booster Club.   SGTC alumni that would like to set up individual tailgating events in designated areas should contact SGTC Vice President of Student Affairs Eulish Kinchens, ekinchens@southgatech.edu.

   The Jets and Lady Jets will be playing Albany Tech.  The public is invited to attend this free event.  Games start at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.

    This is a black out event and all SGTC supporters are encouraged to wear Black.  Free black t-shirts (as long as supplies last) will be given out at the door and free tickets for door prizes will also be given out.  Scoops Ice Cream truck and other vendors will be on hand for individuals to purchase sweets to go with the free hamburger and hotdog lunch with the trimmings provided by the Chamber of Commerce, Immerys and the Jets Booster Club.

   All South Georgia Technical College current students, faculty and staff, alumni, former faculty and staff, and former SGTC basketball players and coaches are encouraged to come out and join in the celebration.  The 2025 – 2026 Lady Jets and Jets sophomores will be recognized between the two basketball games around 2:30 p.m. Alumni and former faculty and staff will be spotlighted during the half-time of the Jets ball game and family friendly activities are also scheduled.

    SGTC faculty, staff and students will be enjoying a number of activities during the week leading up to Homecoming with Monday – Hat Day; Tuesday – Twin Day; Wednesday – Denham Day; and Thursday – School Colors Day.  All faculty and staff are asked to support the Saturday – Blackout Day by wearing black to cheer o the Jets and Lady Jets at the game.
