SGTC Lady Jet Vera Gunaydin earns GCAA Player of Week honors

   South Georgia Technical College (SGTC) Lady Jet Vera Gunaydin recently was selected as the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA)Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for the first week of 2024 following SGTC’s wins over Snow College and St. Petersburg College.

   Vera Gunaydin, a 5’ 9” sophomore guard from Ankara, Turkey, averaged 11 points and nine rebounds in match-ups against opponents in the SGTC Lady Jets Holiday Classic tournament recently.  The Lady Jets are currently 8 – 5 overall and 1 – 0 in the GCAA.

    She is currently averaging 11.9 points per game for the Lady Jets and is one of only three players to be averaging in double-digits.  She has the highest three-point shooting percentage for the Lady Jets hitting 36.2 percent of her attempted shots.  She is also the second leading rebounder for the team averaging 5.9 per game.

    Last season, Gunaydin played in 13 games as a freshman and averaged 2.9 points per game and was a 47.1% three-point percentage shooter.  This year, she has started all 13 games for the Lady Jets.

   Gunaydin is the third Jet or Lady Jet to be selected for this honor for the 2023 – 2024 season.  Her teammate, Maeva Fotsa, a sophomore center from Quebec, Canada, was tapped for the honor for the week of November 27, 2023.  The Jets Deonte Williams was selected as the Men’s GCAA Player of the Week, November 13, 2023 and again on December 11, 2023.

   The Lady Jets will travel to Swainsboro to face East Georgia State College on Saturday, January 6, at 1 p.m. and then travel to Macon to play Central Georgia Tech in a double-header Wednesday, January 10 at 5:30 p.m.  The Lady Jets will return home for a rematch with Andrew College on Saturday, January 13, in a doubleheader.  Games begin at 1 p.m.  They will also host Georgia Highlands at home on Wednesday, January 17, at 5:30 p.m.
