SGTC Lady Jets defeat East Georgia College on last-second shot

SWAINSBORO, GA – South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets freshman guard Alyssa Nieves from Tampa, FL, sank a last-second three-point shot to lift the South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets to a 61- 58 conference win over the East Georgia College Lady Bobcats in Swainsboro.
“This is the second time that we have played East Georgia on their home court in Swainsboro and this is the second time that we have come away with a three-point victory,” said South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets head coach James Frey. “This was a close one but I am very proud of the Lady Jets and how they stayed focused until the final buzzer.”
The South Georgia Tech Lady Jets are ranked 7th in the nation in the National Junior College Athletic Association and they are currently in first place in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association with a perfect 6 – 0 conference record and a 12 – 1 overall record. East Georgia dropped to fifth place with a 2 – 4 conference record. They are 5 – 5 overall. Central Georgia Tech is currently second with a 2 – 1 GCAA record and a 6 – 5 overall performance.
In addition to the last second shot by Alyssa Nieves, who had five total points on the night, South Georgia Tech had to depend on sophomore forward Esther Adenike from Nigeria, who wound up with a total of 31 points, eight rebounds, one assist, and one steal. She was the only Lady Jet to wind up in double-figures.
Sophomore forward Houlfat Mahouchiza from France was on the verge of entering the double-digit realm but she only posted nine points before fouling out. She had 10 rebounds to go with her nine points, three steals, and one blocked shot on the night.
Freshman forward Bigue Sarr from Senegal came off the bench to score five points and then two other freshmen Ricka Jackson and Aubrey Maulden tossed in four points each. Sophomore guard Kayla Holmes closed out the scoring with three points.
The Lady Jets will return home to host Sante Fe College at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 16th as part of a double-header with the Jets, who are scheduled to play Coastal Alabama from Monroeville at 4 p.m. The two teams will break for Christmas after that game but return to the courts on December 29th when they both host Classic tournaments featuring outstanding competition.
The Jets Holiday Classic will be December 29th and 30th. The Jets play at 2 p.m. on December 29th and face Wake Tech. The Lady Jets will end that full day of basketball with an 8 p.m. game against Cape Fear. The Jets will play again on December 30th at 2 p.m. against St. Petersburg College and the Lady Jets will take to the court at 8 p.m. that night against the top-team in the nation, Gulf Coast. The Lady Jets will also play at 3 p.m. Sunday, December 31st.
