Community leaders gathered recently at South Georgia Technical College to celebrate the Transportation Investment Act (TIA) results and officially cut the ribbon on the roundabout at South Georgia Tech Parkway and Highway 49.

The TIA used TSPLOST (Transportation Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax) to fund and complete transportation projects and purchase needed equipment.  Sumter County voters and the River Valley Region approved the additional one-cent sales tax in 2012.  The 10-year tax is supporting and funding regional and local transportation improvements.  Sumter County has collected over $6.5 million thus far, which is about 25% of the regional share.

Americus, Andersonville, Desoto, Leslie, and Plains as well as Sumter County’s unincorporated areas have each benefited from the additional TSPLOST funds.  Sumter County Board of Commissioners Chairman Clay Jones, South Georgia Technical College President Dr. John Watford, TIA Program Administrator Kenneth Franks, and Sumter County Development Authority Chairman Paul Hall addressed the group as part of the celebration and ribbon cutting.

Representatives from Americus, Andersonville, Desoto, Leslie, Plains, and Sumter County also spoke at the event.  A complete article about the celebration and ribbon cutting can be located at: https://www.americustimesrecorder.com/2019/04/07/development-authority-hosts-tia-celebration-ribbon-cutting/
