Jets defeat Georgia Highlands, finish 3rd in GCAA regular season
Rome, GA – The South Georgia Technical College Jets came away with a 67 – 57 victory over Georgia Highlands in Rome, Wednesday to capture third place in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association regular season rankings.
The Jets still have one game remaining against Gordon College on Saturday, March 7, in Barnesville, but their 10 – 5 GCAA record has assured them of the third-place seed going into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XVII tournament. Central Georgia Tech is currently first with a 14 – 1 record followed by South Georgia State College at 12 – 3.
The Jets will host a quarterfinal game on Tuesday, March 10th at 7 p.m. in the Hanger. They could play Gordon College (8 – 7), East Georgia (7 – 8), Albany Tech (7 – 9) or Georgia Highlands (6 – 9) depending on how the games on Saturday, March 7th turn out. SGTC, Gordon, East Georgia, and Georgia Highlands still have one more game in the regular season. The winner of that game will advance to the NJCAA Region XVII semi-final round on Friday, March 13th. The game will be held at the highest seed’s home gym.
In the regular season match-up with Georgia Highlands, Jets sophomore guard Jalexs Ewing was the top scorer with 25 points. He hit 12 of 14 free throws along with one three-point basket and five two-point goals. He also had 10 rebounds for a double-double night.
Freshman point guard Clark Mastin and sophomore center Matt Mbole were the only other Jets in double-figures and they both had 11 points each. Mbole led the team in rebounds with 14 to finish with a double-double night.
Jarius Davis, a freshman guard, added nine points, Dwight Brown tossed in seven, and then Marc Ferdy and Ilich Yacaman closed out the scoring with two points each.
The Jets were up 31 – 26 at the end of the first half and built on that lead by outscoring Georgia Highlands, 36 – 31 in the second half to clinch the 67 – 67 victory.
South Georgia Tech will now travel to Barnesville for the final regular season game on Saturday, March 7th at 2 p.m.
