Jets defeat Gordon College, finish 3rd in GCAA
Barnesville, GA – The South Georgia Technical College Jets took an impressive 92 – 66 win over Gordon College to finish in third place in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) regular season. They will host Albany Tech in an NJCAA Regional XVII tournament quarterfinal game on Tuesday, March 10th at 7 p.m. in the Hangar.
This was the fifth consecutive win for the Jets and it allowed them to finish the regular season at 15 – 15 and 11 – 5 in the GCAA. Central Georgia Tech (15 – 1) was the GCAA Regular Season champion and will now host the Region XVII semi-final and final rounds on Friday, March 13th and Saturday, March 14th as long as they keep winning.
South Georgia State College (13 – 3) finished in second place followed by the Jets in third and Gordon College (8 -8) in fourth place. Albany Tech (7 – 9) finished in fifth place followed by East Georgia (7 – 9) in sixth place. Georgia Highlands (6 – 10) was the seventh-place team in the GCAA and Southern Crescent Tech (3 – 13) finished in eight place followed by Andrew (2 – 14) in ninth place.
The top eight teams will now advance to the NJCAA Region XVII tournament with the first four teams hosting the quarterfinal games on Tuesday, March 10th. Central Georgia Tech will face Southern Crescent Tech at 7 p.m. Tuesday in Macon, Georgia will host East Georgia State on Tuesday and South Georgia Tech will host Albany Tech. South Georgia State College is the other quarterfinal game and they will host Georgia Highlands.
The winners of those game will advance to the semi-final round on Friday, March 13. The winner of the Central Georgia Tech – Southern Crescent Tech game will play at 6 p.m. Friday, followed by the winners of the South Georgia Tech – Albany Tech game and the South Georgia State and Georgia Highlands games at 8 p.m. Friday. The two winners will meet in the NJCAA Region XVII finals at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 14th.
Jalexs Ewing led the Jets to their fifth consecutive win this season in the match-up against Gordon College Saturday with an impressive 24 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. He was followed by Clark Mastin, who added 17 points on the night. Jarius Davis was close behind with 16 points and then Matt Mbole added 11 points and pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double night.
Ilich Yacaman closed out the double-digit scoring with 10 points. Dwight Brown added eight points, and then Frainkie Raines and Marc Ferdy ended the game with three points each.
The Jets jumped out to a 45 – 36 lead at the end of the first half and then outscored Gordon, 47 – 30 in the second half to capture the 92 – 66 victory.
The Jets will now attempt to take their second win of the season over Albany Tech in the NJCAA Region XVII quarterfinal tournament on Tuesday, March 10th at 7 p.m. The Jets lost to Albany Tech in Albany, 68 – 63 on February 9th. They came back and defeated Albany Tech 89 – 57 February 28th during the SGTC Alumni – Homecoming game.
The winner of the SGTC – Albany Tech will advance to the NJCAA Region XVII semi-final round. The game should be held at Central Georgia Tech in Macon, which is currently ranked first in the conference. SGTC is the only conference team to defeat Central Georgia Tech this season. They upset Central 65 – 62 in Macon, February 11th but lost to them in Americus 84 – 74 on January 7th.
