Tallahassee, FL – The South Georgia Technical College Jets dropped two tough decisions to nationally ranked teams in the Tallahassee Community College Seals Financial Tip-Off Classic in Tallahassee, FL this past weekend. The Jets lost 94 – 57 to the fourth ranked Eastern Florida State College team on Friday and then fell 84 – 57 to the 19th ranked Tallahassee Community College Eagles on Saturday.
“We knew this was going to be some very tough competition,” said South Georgia Technical College Jets head coach Travis Garrett. “But to get better, you have to play good teams. We probably have one of the toughest non-conference schedules in our division. We have some work to do and hopefully we can learn from this and begin to move forward.”
Strong defense from both Eastern Florida State College and Tallahassee Community College contributed to the Jets low scoring efforts. The Jets were 18 of 59 from the field in the game against Eastern Florida and then were 18 of 58 against Tallahassee. “You can’t shoot 30 or 31% from the field and expect to outscore good opponents,” said Coach Garrett. “We didn’t shoot the ball well at all and that is something that we have got to work on.”
The Jets also got outrebounded in both games. Eastern Florida State outrebounded the Jets 52 to 26 and Tallahassee came up with 50 rebounds to the Jets 37.
Only one Jet, Jalen Thomas, the freshman guard from Columbus, Georgia, scored in double-figures against Eastern Florida. He came off the bench to score 17 points. He was five of nine from the field with three three-pointers. He was also four of five from the free throw line.
In that game, the Jets starting five only managed to score 12 points in 40 minutes. Three reserves, Bobby Jackson, a sophomore guard from Dacula, GA; DeAndre Mack, a freshman from Atlanta, GA; and Marquel Wiggins, a freshman from Montezuma, GA, all came off the bench and scored seven points each. Starter Pat Welch, a sophomore from Pembroke, NH; also had seven points.
In the game against Tallahassee Community College, Andre Kennedy, a sophomore from Albany, GA; led the team in scoring with 15 points. He started both games and had five points in the first match-up. Coach Garrett changed up the starting line-up slightly in that second game. Bobby Jackson started and was the only other player in double-figures with 10 points. He was also the leading rebounder with 7. Pat Welch started and had eight points and then DeAntre Mack came off the bench to toss in eight points also.
The losses dropped the Jets to 1 – 2 on the season. They will try to rebound this weekend when they travel to Tampa, FL. The Jets will face Daytona State in the Veterans Classic in Tampa on Friday, November 11th at 6 p.m. and then Miami Dade at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
The Jets will continue to travel the next weekend. They will participate in the South Georgia State Classic on November 18th and 19th in Waycross. They will face Southern Crescent at 6 p.m. Friday, November 18th and Combine Academy at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 19th. They have a game against Southern Union Community College in Wadley, AL on Tuesday, November 22nd before returning home for the Jets Thanksgiving Classic on Friday, November 25th and 26th. They host St. Petersburg College at 4 p.m. on Friday and College of Central Florida on Saturday, November 26th at 4 p.m. The Lady Jets will play at home at 6 p.m. on Saturday and 6 p.m. that Sunday.
