Jets and Lady Jets split in key GCAA contests

The South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets moved to 6 – 0 and 18 – 3 with an impressive 91- 39 win over the Chattahoochee Tech Lady Eagles recently to remain first in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association conference (GCAA) standings and regain a National Junior College Athletic Association National Ranking (NJCAA) of 24th in the Women’s Division I conference.
The Jets did not fare as well. They dropped a tough 78 – 61 decision to the Gordon State Highlanders in the GCAA conference doubleheader. The Jets are now 2 – 3 in the GCAA and 8 – 11 overall.
“I think that was the best or most complete game that we have played all season,” said South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Lady Jets Head Coach James Frey. “I was very pleased overall and I hope that we continue to play with that momentum.”
South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets sophomore guard La’Deja James showed her leadership skills on the court and finished the game with 25 points, three rebounds, three assists and two steals. Another sophomore Camille Coleman also played well with a total of 21 points, three rebounds and six steals.
Shaineequah Fluellyn, a sophomore guard, was the only other Lady Jet in double-figures and she had 12 points, two rebounds and one steal. Marina Balaguer, a freshman guard from Spain, tossed in eight points and then Houlfat Mahouchiza, Kanna Suzuki, and Desiree Corbin all had six points each.
The Lady Jets led 48 – 14 at the half and then continued to build on that lead to capture the 91 – 39 victory and remain undefeated in the GCAA conference.
The Jets started off slow and only had the lead once during the entire game against Gordon State College, which is now 2 – 2 in the conference and 12 – 6 overall. There were ranked sixth behind South Georgia Tech.
Gordon stretched their overall lead to 12 points at the end of the first half and were up 38 – 26. They continued to outscore the Jets in the second half and went up by as many as 17 points by the final buzzer to capture the win, 78 – 61.
The Jets were led in scoring by freshman Mike Boone who had 16 points. Sophomore Ed Jones came up with 15 points and then Jalen Thomas closed out the double-digit scoring with 10 points.
Both the Jets and the Lady Jets will travel to Atlanta on Saturday, January 28th to take on Atlanta Metropolitan in a conference double-header. The Lady Jets will open at 2 p.m. and the Jets will follow at 4 p.m. Then on Wednesday, Feb. 1st, the Jets travel to Waycross to match-up against South Georgia College while the Lady Jets travel to Cuthbert to play Andrew College. The women’s game is at 5:30 and the men play at 7 p.m.
Both teams will continue playing on the road the next week. They will face Central Georgia Tech in Macon on Saturday, February 4th in a conference double-header. The Lady Jets open at 2 p.m. and the men follow at 4 p.m. The two teams will travel to Marietta on February 8th for a double-header against Chattahoochee Tech at 5:30 and 7:30.
After those four back to back road games, the Jets and Lady Jets return home to host Georgia Highlands on Saturday, February 11th at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
