Jets, Lady Jets sweep Andrew College in GCAA match-up

The South Georgia Technical College Jets and Lady Jets took convincing wins over the Andrew College Tigers and Lady Tigers Saturday in the Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) match-ups in the Hangar. The Lady Jets opened with an 89 – 66 win and then the Jets roared to an 89 – 49 victory.
The Lady Jets remained tied for first place in the GCAA with East Georgia State College. The Lady Jets are 9 – 2 in the conference and 14 – 12 overall. The South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets travel to Swainsboro tonight to face East Georgia in a battle for sole possession of first place in the conference.
The Jets moved to 7 – 5 in the conference and are currently tied for third place. They are 11 – 15 on the season. Andrew College dropped to eighth place and are 2 – 10 and 5 – 21 this season. Central Georgia Tech (10 – 1) remains in first place for the men followed by South Georgia State (9-3), and Albany Tech (7 – 5) and South Georgia Tech (7 – 5) are tied for third place. East Georgia (6 – 6) are fifth, Gordon is sixth (6 – 7), followed by Georgia Highlands (5-7), Andrew (2- 10), and Southern Crescent Tech (1-9).
In the women’s contest, Andrew College scored first and kept a narrow lead until 2:51 left in the first quarter. The Lady Jets pulled ahead 13 – 12 at that point and never looked back. They had gone up 22 – 18 at the end of the first quarter and stretched that lead to 42 – 26 by the half. They continued to outscore Andrew in the second half and clinched the win, 89 – 66.
Sophomore guard Jaidyn Elam from Pontiac, MI, led the Lady Jets in scoring with 29 points and she also led the team in rebounds with 13 for a double-double afternoon. She was nine of 15 from the field, four of seven from the three-point line, and hit seven of eight free throws.
Elam was joined in double-digits by two other Lady Jets. Freshman guard Ja’Niya Broome from Harris County tossed in 25 points and had six rebounds. Taja Bennett, sophomore guard from Dallas, Texas, followed with 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Jada Jones was close behind with nine points. Candice Ganga had eight points and then Glory Kaine closed out the scoring with two points.
Following that impressive victory, the Jets came out and took command early. They were up 46 – 20 at the half and continued to outscore Andrew’s Tigers to coast to the 89 – 49 victory. Five Jets scored in double-digits.
Marcellus Myles, freshman guard from Thomaston, GA, led the Jets in scoring with 14 points. He was six of nine from the field, one of three from the three point line, and one of one from the foul line. He was followed by Guillaume Schoentgen who added 13 points. Matt Mbole had 12 points and led the team in rebounds with 10 for a double-double day. Then Jalexs Ewing and Clark Mastin both tossed in 10 points to round out the double-digit scoring.
Frankie Raines, a freshman from Macon County, came away with nine points, Dwight Brown added five, Ralfs Iesalnieks, Jeremy Nixon, and Jarius Davis tossed in four points each and then Noa Istrefi and Marc Ferdy closed out the scoring with two points each.
The Lady Jets travel to Swainsboro today for a make-up game with East Georgia to determine who remains in first place in the GCAA. The game tips off at 5:30 p.m. Both the Jets and Lady Jets travel to Griffin for a double-header with Southern Crescent Tech on Wednesday, February 25th at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Then the Jets and Lady Jets return home for their Homecoming, Alumni, and Sophomore Day event on Saturday, February 28th at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. All former faculty, staff, and students are encouraged to come out and cheer on the Jets and Lady Jets. The Americus-Sumter County Chamber will be providing a free Hamburger and Hot Dog lunch beginning at 12:15 followed by the games. Free t-shirts (while supplies last) will be given out.
