Jets, Lady Jets sweep East Georgia State College

The South Georgia Technical College Jets and Lady Jets swept the East Georgia State College Bobcats and Lady Bobcats in Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association (GCAA) conference match-ups Saturday. The Lady Jets opened with an 85 – 69 win over the Lady Bobcats and the Jets followed with an impressive 88 – 74 victory in the second half of the double-header.
The Lady Jets moved into first place in the GCAA with the win. They are currently 7 – 2 in the conference and 12 – 12 overall. East Georgia is 6 – 2 and 13 – 7. East Georgia defeated the Lady Jets, 69 – 66, in their first meeting in Swainsboro on January 17th. The two teams will meet again on February 23rd in Swainsboro for first place bragging rights. Albany Tech (6 – 5) is in third place followed by Andrew (4 – 5), Central Georgia Tech (3 – 4) and Southern Crescent (0 – 8).
The Jets are now 6 – 4 in the GCAA after the win over East Georgia and currently in fourth place behind Central Georgia Tech (8 – 1), South Georgia State (7 – 3), and Albany Tech (7-3). East Georgia is now tied with Georgia Highlands for 6th place with identical 4 – 6 records. Gordon College (5 – 6) is in fifth place and Andrew (2- 8) is currently 8th and Southern Crescent (1-7) is in 9th place.
In the opening contest the Lady Jets and Lady Bobcats swapped the lead seven times and had five ties in the first 20-minutes. The Lady Jets were up 23 – 18 at the end of the first quarter and managed to keep that five-point lead with the score 42 – 38 at the end of the first half. A strong second half allowed the Lady Jets to clinch the 85 – 69 victory.
Freshman guard Ja’Niya Broome led the Lady Jets with 31 points. She also had nine rebounds and three assists. Sophomore Taja Bennett was close behind with 22 points and seven rebounds. Jaidyn Elam and Candice Ganga also scored in double-digits with 12 and 10 points respectively. Elam led the team in rebounds with 11. Jada Jones and Sephora Benth closed out the scoring with six and four points.
In the men’s game, freshman wing Guillaume Schoentgen from Laaber Germany had 29 points, 5 rebounds and a blocked shot to lead the Jets to the 88 – 74 victory. This was his highest point performance this season with the Jets. Jalexs Ewing and Clark Mastin followed up with 16 points each and then Matt Mbole tossed in 10 points and pulled down 15 rebounds. He also had a blocked shot.
Jarius Davis, a freshman guard from Greensboro, NC pulled down seven points, Reggie Cleveland and Marc Ferdy both had three points and then Dwight Brown and Ilich Yacaman closed out the scoring with two points each.
The Jets and Lady Jets will return to the court Wednesday night when they host Southern Crescent Technical College in a double-header at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. They will both play at home again on Saturday, February 21st when they host Andrew College at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
The two teams will hit the road the following week with the Lady Jets traveling to Swainsboro to play East Georgia State College on Monday, February 23rd. Both the Jets and Lady Jets will travel to Griffin to take on Southern Crescent in a double-header on Wednesday, February 25th with 5:30 and 7:30 tipoffs. The two teams will then host Albany Technical College on Saturday, February 28th in a double-header in the James S. Peters gymnasium for Homecoming/Sophomore Day at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m.
