Jets win 3rd consecutive conference game, Lady Jets fall to Wallace State

The South Georgia Technical College Jets came from behind to capture their third consecutive Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association Division I men’s basketball victory in a 79 – 74 overtime match-up with South Georgia State College in Waycross. But the Lady Jets couldn’t put it all together and they dropped a 78 – 57 non-conference decision to Wallace State in Hanceville, AL over the weekend.
The Lady Jets were riding a five-game winning streak before falling to Wallace State. However, the Lady Jets are still ranked in first place in the GCAA with a 10 – 0 conference record and an 18 – 3 overall record this season. The win over South Georgia State put the Jets in a two way tie for fourth place with Andrew College. The Jets are 3 – 2 in the GCAA and 7 – 12 overall.
The Jets were trailing South Georgia State 31 – 24 at the end of the first half but rallied in the second half and outscored the Hawks 42 – 35 to tie the game at 66 – 66 at the end of the regulation period. The Jets continued to take the momentum in overtime and walked off with a 79 – 74 conference win over the 0 – 4 and 8 – 10 Hawks in their own gymnasium in Waycross.
Freshman guard Justin Johnson was the top scorer for the Jets with 18 points, three assists and five rebounds. Sophomore Adonis Green came on strong with 15 points and 18 rebounds for a double-double. Freshman Jeremy Johnson closed out the double-digit scoring for the Jets with 14 points, six rebounds, and three assists.
The other Jets who scored in the over-time victory included: Sam Matice and Toriano Lewis with six apiece; Jaylan McKinney, 5; Nick Cummings, 4, DJ Fisher, Dijon Brown, and Durand Green with 3 each; and Johnathan Tchuisse, 2 points.
While the Jets were securing their third consecutive conference win, the Lady Jets were struggling in Alabama. They fell behind 23 – 21 at the end of the first half and then dropped behind 41 – 27 by half-time after only scoring six points in the second 10-minute quarter. Wallace State continued to outscore the Lady Jets 19 – 14 in the third quarter and 18 – 16 in the fourth quarter to take the 78 – 57 victory.
Coach Frey changed up the Lady Jets starting line-up in that game. Sophomore guard Alyssa Nieves was the only starter for the Lady Jets in double-digits and she led the team with 14 points. She was two of four from the three-point line and four of six from the foul line. Sophomore Center Bigue Sarr came off the bench to add 13 points and sophomore forward Ricka Jackson came off the bench to account for 11 points and close out the double-digit scoring.
Only four other players on the Lady Jets squad scored. Mari Hill came off the bench to add six points, Fatou Pouye had six points, Rio Yamazaki added five points and Yasriyyah Wazeerud-Din had two points on the night.
Both the Jets and the Lady Jets will travel to Albany on Wednesday, January 23rd for a match-up with Albany Tech on the Albany State Campus at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. and then the Jets travel to Barnesville to play Gordon State College on Saturday, January 26th at 3 p.m.
