SGTC Jets and Lady Jets read to Sumter Primary students

October 25, 2016
SGTC Mascot, “ACE”, and several Jets and Lady Jets basketball players are shown with Sumter Primary School students. The SGTC Players (l to r) are LaDeja James, a sophomore from Virginia Beach, VA; Desire Corbin, a sophomore from Griffin, GA; Bobby Jackson, a sophomore from Dacula, GA; Madison Cameron, a sophomore forward from Alberta, Canada, Tre’Von Teague, a sophomore from Cincinatti, OH; and Pat Welch, a sophomore from Pembroke, NH.

The South Georgia Technical College 2016 – 2017 JETS and Lady JETS basketball team along with ‘ACE’, the SGTC Mascot, visited Sumter Primary School recently to read to the students.

“This is really a great community service event for our basketball players as well as for our local elementary school students,” said South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Lady Jets head basketball coach James Frey. “It is a joy to see the smiles on the children’s faces as ACE and the players come into their classrooms. We think that it is important for our athletes to give back to the community. The players seemed to enjoy this as much as the elementary school students.”

The South Georgia Technical College Jets and Lady Jets basketball teams have been visiting different elementary schools throughout the college’s six county service area during the months of September and October to read to different classrooms.

The Jets and Lady Jets are hoping that some of these same elementary school students and teachers will come out this season and support them on the court. The 2016 – 2017 regular season opens on Tuesday, November 1st with a double header. The Lady Jets play Chattahoochee Valley Community College at 6 p.m. and the Jets will open against New Rock Prep at 8 p.m. in the Hangar on the South Georgia Tech campus in Americus.
