South Georgia Technical College Career Services recently organized a workshop aimed at assisting students in crafting effective resumes. The workshop emphasized the importance of tailoring resumes to job announcements and showcasing relevant skills to demonstrate suitability for the desired positions.

Guest speaker Emily Simpson, owner of The Sweet Spot Baking Company, engaged students from various disciplines including Cosmetology, Criminal Justice, and Automotive with valuable insights into basic resume tips. Simpson underscored the significance of highlighting skills pertinent to the job and advised against attempting to include every skill and work experience on the resume.

Key takeaways from the workshop included the use of bullet points for clarity, prioritizing the most relevant information, and refraining from focusing solely on GPA. Students were encouraged to incorporate resume keywords derived from job descriptions and to consider volunteering opportunities to bolster their experience.

Cynthia Carter, Career Services Director, emphasized the role of Career Services as a vital resource for students, offering workshops on career readiness, resume building, cover letter writing, mock interviews, and personalized assistance for job searches. Carter encouraged students to take advantage of the Career Services resources for supporting job seekers within SGTC and the surrounding service delivery area.
