South Georgia Technical College was one of the special tours planned as part of the Sumter Historic Trust’s History Camp for the area’s rising 5th and 6th graders, which was made possible through a joint sponsorship of the Charles Mix Foundation and the Charles R. Crisp Preservation Trust.

The History Camp participants had the opportunity for hands on learning about Sumter County’s history beginning with early settlers through the early 1900’s. The History Camp also included specially arranged tours of local historical sites, allowing the campers to see local history in a way that they may not have otherwise experienced.

South Georgia Technical College toured students through the Charles Lindberg section of the Griffin Bell Aerospace Technology Center and allowed students to see the Stearman bi-wing aircraft from the World War II era, that has been restored by the South Georgia Technical College aviation faculty, staff, and students. The students were also able to climb in the aircraft to see and touch the different controls.

The students learned about the history of South Georgia Technical College serving as a World War I and II aviation training base. South Georgia Technical College is Georgia’s oldest aviation school and its rich history makes it one of the oldest training facilities in the United States.
