SGTC’s Lady Jets James Frey recognized as District J Coach of Year at NJCAA National Tournament

Lubbock, Texas- South Georgia Technical College Athletic Director and Lady Jets head coach James Frey was presented with the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) District J Coach of the Year honors at the opening ceremonies of the NJCAA Division I Women’s National Basketball Tournament in Lubbock, Texas.
South Georgia Technical College President Dr. John Watford congratulated Coach Frey on the honor and praised him, assistant coach Kezia Conyers and the 2017 – 2018 South Georgia Technical College Lady Jets for their exceptional regular season and for earning their fourth trip to the NJCAA National Tournament in five years.
“We are so proud of Coach Frey, Coach Conyers, and the Lady Jets,” said Dr. Watford. “Not only have you represented South Georgia Technical College with dignity and honor on the basketball court but also as exceptional coaches and instructors and as student athletes in the classroom. This is a tremendous honor and I am pleased to be here to congratulate you as you represent Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, and southern West Virginia here at the National Tournament,” said Dr. Watford.
This is Coach James Frey fourth recognition as the NJCAA District J Coach of the Year in five years. He was recognized along with the other top District Coaches across the nation. Coach Frey, Coach Conyers and the Lady Jets have won four Georgia Collegiate Athletic Association regular season titles, four NJCAA Region XVII Tournament trophies and four District J Championships.
Coach Frey has been at the helm of the Lady Jets for six seasons and has recorded 20-plus wins each year. This season the Lady Jets are currently 28 – 5 and are currently ranked 23rd in the nation in NJCAA Division I women’s basketball play. The Lady Jets best record in a single season is 30 – 5.
Frey has been honored as the GCAA Coach of the Year for four times in his six years as well as the District J coach of the year four times. Frey’s record is 161 – 39 as the head coach at SGTC.
The Lady Jets did not qualify for the national tournament his first year but came back and put together back-to-back trips to the national tournament before winning the conference title but losing in the NJCAA Region XVII tournament in 2015-2016 to miss out on the national tournament trip. The Lady Jets have now earned their second back-to-back opportunity to advance to the national tournament.
They are scheduled to play the 10th ranked Casper, Wyoming team at 5 p.m. in the first round of the NJCAA National Tournament on Monday. The game can be heard live on WISK 98.7.
