Dr. Cayanna Good, Assistant Commissioner for Adult Education for the Technical College System of Georgia, visited South Georgia Technical College in Americus recently and met with SGTC President Dr. John Watford and Lillie Ann Winn, Dean of Adult Education at SGTC, and her staff members.

“We are very pleased to have Dr. Good visit our campus and have the opportunity to meet and observe our Adult Education instructors and practices,” said Dr. Watford. “Providing individuals in our service area with access to the adult education and literacy programs and activities is a key part of our workforce development mission. This is a first step for many individuals to be able to obtain a GED and learn the skills they need to enter the workforce.”

According to recent statistics, approximately 32 million Americans cannot read or write. In Georgia, roughly 1.1 million individuals over the age of 18 have not completed high school or received a General Education Development diploma. South Georgia Technical College’s Adult Education department is helping to change those statistics by providing GED classes and testing information in Sumter, Crisp, Schley, Macon, Marion, Webster, and Taylor Counties.

South Georgia Technical College also incorporated an IET, Integrated Education and Training program, into its Adult Education classes. IET is a service approach that provides adult education and literacy activities concurrently and contextually with workforce preparation activities and workforce training for a specific occupation or occupational cluster for the purpose of education and career advancement.

After meeting with SGTC President Watford, Vice President of Operations Karen Werling, SGTC Dean of Adult Education Lillie Ann Winn and her staff members, SGTC Transition Specialist Tracy Israel and SGTC Administrative Assistant Lisa Jordan, Dr. Good, toured the campus and attended an adult education classroom and met with instructors.
